Xuanwu Hospital and Baheal Medical Have Officially Launched the ZAP-X IIT Research to Directly Address the Key Challenges in the Treatment of Brain Metastases

Baheal Medical (301015.SZ), in collaboration with Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University, has officially launched an Investigator Initiated Trial (IIT) focused on the clinical application of ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery System in brain metastases. The study was announced during the Academic Forum of the Chinese Intracranial Metastasis Alliance (CLAIM) held on December 8, 2025. The IIT study is led by Professor Zhang Hongqi, Director of Neurosurgery at Xuanwu Hospital, and aims to further evaluate the clinical efficacy, safety, and dosimetric characteristics of ZAP-X for patients with brain metastases.

Brain metastases represent the most common type of intracranial tumor in China, with more than 1.5 million new cases diagnosed annually in China. Originating from primary cancers such as lung and breast cancer, brain metastases are a hallmark of advanced-stage malignancy and remain one of the most challenging conditions in neuro-oncology. Without timely intervention, median survival for patients with brain metastases may be less than six months.

 

Against the backdrop of growing demand for precision treatment in brain metastases, the study is being conducted under the academic guidance of CLAIM and implemented by the Department of Neurosurgery at Xuanwu Hospital. The research focuses on the ZAP-X system, an advanced stereotactic radiosurgery platform developed by Professor John R. Adler, internationally renowned neurosurgeon and inventor of the CyberKnife.

 

Designed specifically for cranial radiosurgery, ZAP-X incorporates an innovative gyroscopic architecture capable of delivering thousands of non-coplanar radiation beams, enabling highly precise tumor targeting while minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy brain tissue. The system integrates submillimeter accuracy, real-time image guidance, and real-time dose monitoring, establishing a new benchmark for precision and safety in stereotactic radiosurgery. ZAP-X has been approved in 24 countries and regions and has been used in more than 5,000 clinical cases worldwide.

 

At the launch ceremony, Ge Le, Party Secretary of Tianjin Huanhu Hospital and oncologist, stated that the hospital has established a Head and Neck Neuro-Oncology Center integrating radiosurgery, radiation oncology, and medical oncology to improve neurological function preservation, quality of life, and survival outcomes for patients. He expressed expectations that the IIT study led by Xuanwu Hospital would further explore innovative treatment approaches for brain metastases.

During the conference, Professor John R. Adler shared perspectives on the evolution of precision radiotherapy and the original vision behind the development of ZAP-X. He emphasized that precision remains the central driving force in the advancement of radiotherapy technologies and noted that precision radiosurgery systems such as ZAP-X embody a patient-centered approach aimed at maximizing therapeutic benefit while minimizing treatment-related harm.

During the academic session, Professor Chi Zhihong and Professor Zhao Jun from Peking University Cancer Hospital, Professor Bian Li from the Fifth Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital, and Professor Xiao Xinru from Xuanwu Hospital shared clinical insights into brain metastases originating from melanoma, lung cancer, breast cancer, and other primary malignancies, with discussions covering disease characteristics and surgical treatment strategies.
